The gallery flat on the Neuweg was designed in 1974 by architect R.M.H. Magnée (1915-2002) in a style typical of the construction period. The flat was built on behalf of the Stichting Pensioenfonds for the Transport and Port Companies in Rotterdam on the site of the former subdistrict court.
The subdistrict of Hilversum moved in 1966 from the Neuweg to a new building on the ‘s Gravelandseweg. The building on Neuweg was demolished a few years later. The municipality sold the land to the Stichting Pensioenfonds voor de Transport en Portbedrijven in Rotterdam who made plans to build on the plot with premium rental homes. Architect R.M.H. Magnée was commissioned to design the plan.
The new-build plan consisted of 32 studio homes in four floors with commercial space on the ground floor. Each storey consists of 8 houses. The balconies on the side of the Neuweg are linked in three parts (2-4-2) while the rear where the galleries are located in two parts switched (5-3). As a result, the houses are not all the same size. The houses were primarily intended for ‘single people and incomplete families’. They have a simple elongated floor plan consisting of a bedroom, bathroom, a kitchen, living area and balcony.
In the northeast corner of the building are the stairwell and elevator shaft that rise above the (flat) roof of the building sticking out of the apartment building. The building is made of (reinforced) concrete. The parapets of the balconies are covered with washed gravel concrete slabs. To keep out the street noise somewhat is the parapet at an angle of 60°. The side walls of the apartment building are finished with
brown brick, while the higher part of the building is made of dark brick. The houses got aluminum windows. The materials used and the staggered construction parts are typical for the construction period in the 1970s.
The commercial space under the houses has a sloping aluminum facade. The destination was a shop or showroom, but retail sales were expressly excluded. For years The Kijkshop Hilversum was located here. The health center Casa Cuta is now located in the industrial space
Architect Magnée was for many years Dudok’s partner in his own architectural office. After Dudok’s death, Magnée continued the architectural practice under his own name. Especially in the Gooi many of his designs can be found. His most famous design is the apartment complex Palace Residence from 1973-1974 at ‘s Gravelandseweg 86.
