Hilversum was chosen as the place of residence on medical advice, when the state president of South Africa, S.J.P. Kruger, returned to the Netherlands in 1901.
In 1903 Paul Kruger lived in a villa on the outskirts of Trompenberg for several months. A part of the road that cuts through the villa area was named after him: the Krugerweg. He died in Switzerland in 1904.
