This distinguished villa was built in a period when Berlage built a large number of villas. Following the English example, the stairwell functions as the pivot of the villa’s construction. The choice of plastering facades may have been prompted by the quality of the bricks. Berlage’s Jugendstil villa on the edge of the Trompenberg used to have a view over arable land.
Berlage has designed two villas in this area, of which only Zonneheuvel still exists. Architect Berlage from Amsterdam also fulfilled the role of land speculator in Hilversum. He bought land, both for himself and for clients.
