In 1928 Dudok won the competition that the department store group had organized for a new department store in Rotterdam. The department store was the largest and most modern department store in Europe when it opened. De Bijenkorf stood like a large glass palace at the head of the Coolsingel and partly expressed the rise of Rotterdam as a modern and chic metropolis. After the war, the building was demolished because it no longer fitted in with the urban plans of the port city.
