In 1916, Dudok designed a staircase closure for the slope stairs to the Oude Haven. In the style of the Amsterdam School, the staircase was built in decorative masonry clinker bricks. The pattern of horizontal and vertical lines alternated with cantilevered masonry. Between the pillars are the parapets with constricted tops. The high pillar is topped by a decorative copper lantern. The staircase closure works like a funnel. The walker is invited to descend the stairs. As he emerges from the valley after the long climb of up to 70 steps, the sight of the lantern offers the hiker a good excuse to take a breather.
