The Gardenhouse and Lighthouse Cinemas

In early 1936, Dudok visited what was then British India to design a hotel and two cinemas for project developer Humayan Properties Ltd. Due to the specific requirements that applied in the Tropics, the building would not resemble any of his designs in Hilversum, says Dudok, but “you will be able to see that I made it. I have, of course, processed and interpreted the colonial desirability in my own way.” After a major fire in 2014 – the complex had been neglected for some time – it was demolished.
