In memory of General J.B. van Heutsz, commander of the Dutch East Indies army, sculptor Van den Eynde was commissioned to design a monument in collaboration with Dudok in the Gambir district in Batavia (now: Jakarta). The monument, 12 meters high and 20 meters long, was given a block-shaped, asymmetrical structure that was dictated by the place where it had to be built. The monument was demolished during Indonesia’s independence struggle. A fragment of the sculpture has been preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
