As an engineer officer with the Staf der Genie, Dudok designed his very first building in 1911. The assignment was ‘to build a home for soldiers with a house for the family man’. In 1913 Dudok gave an extensive description of the building in the Bouwkundig Weekblad. Dudok had tried to give ‘to the whole the character of the pure brick construction’ ‘which is expressed not only in the facade but also in the stairwell and the conversation room’. Berlage’s influence is evident here. The home was badly hit by the bombing of Den Helder in the Second World War and was demolished after the war years.
